To keep your fishes fresh for 24 hours or more after catching them, follow the below-given useful tips:
Place the Fishes on Ice Immediately after Catching:
Whenever you go for fishing, always bring an icebox with you to place the fishes after catching them. For this purpose, you must use crushed ice as it is more advantageous than the ice blocks. Crushed ice fully covers the fish, cools more rapidly, and keeps the fish colder for longer. So, after catching the fishes, wash them with cold water, and cover using crushed ice.
In the fresh fish display units of grocery stores, the same strategy is used to keep the fish fresh for 24 hours or even longer. However, try not to let fish sock in the frosty water for longer. You can also utilize the same method while cleaning the fish. When the fish is cleaned, quickly sock it in cold water. When it becomes chilled, rinse it quickly, and wipe it off with a paper towel.
Then wrap the fish pieces in plastic sheet and place it on the crushed ice. This method keeps the fish fresh for three to five days.
Keep the Fish in the Fridge after Catching:
After you have caught the fishes, wash them with cold water and let them dry using paper towels. You can also use a clean cloth. Then wrap the fishes with aluminum foil, plastic sheet, or waxed paper, and place in the fridge to keep them fresh. Generally, you can keep the fishes in the fridge for as long as two days.
Moreover, larger fishes or fish pieces will keep fresh for longer than smaller ones. Similarly, lean fishes such as walleye and panfish store better as compared to fatty fishes.
Freezing the Fish to Keep it Fresh:
It is another commonly used method of keeping fishes fresh. Frozen fishes can last for up a year. However, it is significant to properly prepare the fish for freezing. The fishes must not come in contact with the air while freezing, otherwise, they will lose their flavor. So, first of all, wash and clean the fishes and place them in Ziploc bags.
Before closing, ensure to remove the air as much as you can. Then wrap the fishes in aluminum foil and again wrap in freezer paper before freezing. You can likewise use an airtight package sealer to completely remove the air from freezer bags.
Freezing the Fishes in Water:
Another great approach to freeze the fishes is to freeze them inside an ice block. For this purpose, place the washed and cleaned fish in a container. Add water in the container to cover the fish and allow it to freeze. In this way, the fishes will remain fresh for quite a long time. However, to defrost these fishes, keep them in the fridge or cold water for 6 – 8 hours or overnight.
Moreover, try not to defrost frozen fishes in a microwave. It might be possible that some portion of the fish will start to cook before the remaining parts are defrosted.
